What is Zilliqa (ZIL)?
Zilliqa (ZIL) is a high-throughput blockchain platform that introduced sharding as a core architectural feature, enabling the network to scale linearly as more nodes join. Launched in 2018 by a team from the National University of Singapore, Zilliqa was one of the first public blockchains to implement network sharding in production.

How does Zilliqa work?
Zilliqa's sharding technology divides the network into parallel groups (shards) that process transactions simultaneously. Unlike blockchains that process transactions sequentially, Zilliqa's throughput increases as the network grows — theoretically achieving thousands of transactions per second at scale.
The network uses a hybrid consensus mechanism combining Proof of Work (for shard assignment and identity verification) and Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (pBFT) within each shard for fast, energy-efficient transaction validation. This design prevents Sybil attacks while maintaining high throughput.
Zilliqa features Scilla, a purpose-built smart contract language designed for formal verification — enabling mathematical proofs of contract correctness to reduce vulnerabilities. The network is also EVM-compatible through its Ethereum bridge, allowing developers to deploy Solidity contracts on Zilliqa.
Zilliqa Price History
ZIL launched via a token sale in late 2017 and mainnet went live in January 2019. The token reached an all-time high near $0.25 in May 2021, driven by DeFi interest and the launch of its staking program, which attracted significant ZIL to be locked for rewards.
