What is Stellar (XLM)?
Stellar (XLM) is an open-source blockchain protocol designed to facilitate fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset transfers. Founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb (co-founder of Ripple) and Joyce Kim, the Stellar network enables individuals, institutions, and payment services to send money across borders in seconds.
The Stellar network is maintained by the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), a non-profit organization focused on financial inclusion and expanding access to financial services for underserved populations worldwide. Lumens (XLM) serve as the native currency of the network, facilitating transactions and preventing spam.

How does Stellar work?
Stellar uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), a variant of Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA). Unlike Proof of Work or Proof of Stake, SCP achieves consensus through a quorum-based system where each node selects a set of trusted peers. This design enables transaction finality in 3-5 seconds with minimal energy consumption.
The network supports the creation of anchors — trusted entities that hold deposits and issue credit on the blockchain. Anchors bridge real-world assets to the Stellar network, enabling fiat currencies, stablecoins, and other assets to move seamlessly across borders.
Each transaction on Stellar requires a small XLM fee (0.00001 XLM) and a minimum account reserve (currently 1 XLM), preventing network spam while keeping costs negligible for legitimate users. The Stellar DEX allows direct asset exchange on-chain without intermediaries.

XLM launched in 2014 at fractions of a cent. The token surged during the 2017 bull market, reaching an all-time high near $0.94 in January 2018 following listings on major exchanges and announcements of financial institution partnerships.
XLM experienced the prolonged 2018-2019 crypto winter alongside the broader market, trading in the $0.03-$0.10 range for extended periods. A notable rally occurred in late 2021, with XLM reaching $0.60 amid renewed DeFi interest and protocol developments.
