What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin (BTC) is the first and most widely recognized cryptocurrency, created in 2009 by an anonymous developer known as Satoshi Nakamoto. It operates as a decentralized digital currency that enables peer-to-peer transactions without intermediaries like banks or payment processors.

Unlike traditional currencies controlled by central banks, Bitcoin runs on a distributed network of computers worldwide. This design makes it resistant to censorship and manipulation. With a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, Bitcoin is often compared to digital gold — a scarce asset that may serve as a store of value.

Today, Bitcoin represents over 50% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. Major institutions, publicly traded companies, and sovereign wealth funds hold BTC as part of their treasury or investment portfolios.

How does Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin operates on blockchain technology — a public ledger that records every transaction in chronological order. When you send BTC, the transaction is broadcast to the network and verified by miners who solve complex mathematical puzzles through a process called Proof of Work (PoW).

Miners compete to validate transaction blocks approximately every 10 minutes. The winning miner receives newly minted BTC as a reward, currently 3.125 BTC per block after the April 2024 halving. This halving mechanism reduces new supply every four years, contributing to Bitcoin's scarcity.

Your Bitcoin is stored in a wallet identified by a public address (like an account number) and secured by a private key (like a password). Only the holder of the private key can authorize transactions, giving users full control over their funds.

Bitcoin Price History

Bitcoin launched in 2009 with essentially zero value. The first recorded commercial transaction occurred in May 2010 when 10,000 BTC purchased two pizzas — valuing one Bitcoin at a fraction of a cent.

The price crossed $1,000 for the first time in late 2013, then reached nearly $20,000 during the 2017 bull run. After a significant correction, Bitcoin surged past $60,000 in 2021, driven by institutional adoption and growing mainstream recognition.

Bitcoin reached its all-time high above $100,000 in late 2024, reflecting increased demand from spot ETF inflows, corporate treasury allocations, and broader acceptance as a legitimate asset class. Price volatility remains characteristic of BTC markets.
