What is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that emerged from a hard fork of Bitcoin in August 2017. The split was driven by a fundamental disagreement over scalability: Bitcoin Cash increased the block size limit to enable faster, cheaper on-chain transactions for everyday payments.
While Bitcoin evolved toward a store-of-value narrative with layer-2 solutions like the Lightning Network, Bitcoin Cash pursued the original Satoshi Whitepaper vision of electronic cash — direct transfers between users without intermediaries and without prohibitive fees.
BCH shares Bitcoin's core properties: a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, Proof of Work mining, and the same halving schedule. It is accepted by a growing number of merchants and payment processors globally.
How does Bitcoin Cash work?
Bitcoin Cash operates on the same foundational blockchain architecture as Bitcoin, with key modifications. The block size was initially increased from 1 MB to 8 MB (later to 32 MB), allowing significantly more transactions per block and reducing average fees to fractions of a cent.
Like Bitcoin, BCH uses Proof of Work with the SHA-256 hashing algorithm. Miners compete to validate transaction blocks, with the network adjusting difficulty to maintain an average 10-minute block time. BCH implements a rolling 24-hour difficulty adjustment algorithm (DAA) to stabilize block production regardless of hash rate fluctuations.
Bitcoin Cash also supports smart contract-like functionality through its script language and introduced the Simple Ledger Protocol (SLP) for token issuance on its network, extending utility beyond simple value transfer.
Bitcoin Cash Price History
BCH launched in August 2017 at approximately $300–400, immediately establishing itself among the top cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. It surged to an all-time high near $4,355 in December 2017 during the broader bull market, briefly becoming the third-largest cryptocurrency.
A further chain split in November 2018, creating Bitcoin SV, caused significant price volatility and a prolonged decline. BCH has traded through multiple market cycles, demonstrating resilience as an established cryptocurrency with sustained merchant adoption and exchange liquidity.
BCH price movements correlate with Bitcoin and broader crypto market conditions. Its adoption as a low-fee payment medium provides utility demand independent of speculative interest.
